Starless Skies and Broken Dreams

When best friends Lucy Davis and Alexis Tempesta find a drifting bottle in the ocean waves of California, they are transported into a world of monsters, magic, and mayhem. To survive, they must fight against the brutal nature of this strange land, forge their own wills in ruinous cities, and reunite with each other before it's too late. But as Lucy struggles with fear and Alexis grapples with her sense of security, there are more dangers lurking about than they realize. The only question is: how much will it cost them?
"This book really captivated me and I loved how raw and real the characters felt. From the front cover to the last page, I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what happened next. I couldn't put it down! The parallels between the fantasy world and our reality were subtle enough to allow you to escape into Alexis and Lucy's adventures, but overt enough to really make us reflect about how we could make our world a better place. Furthermore, I found myself relating to the characters and the struggles they faced. I found it really amazing that Sophia Kunkel did not present her characters as perfect, but instead portrayed their growth in a very beautiful way. Starless Skies and Broken Dreams is definitely a must-read."

"Starless Skies and Broken Dreams is a fantasy book for everyone. It is told through the eyes of two teenage girls battling their own Earthly struggles. Each character is so well developed that you feel like you are a part of the tale. The world building is present, but not forced. Enough of the tiny alien world is shared, but not all at once, making the history unfold just when you need to know. This is the kind of book you can read in one sitting (I know I did!). You will find yourself feeling for the characters and watching them grow so quickly, but not rushed. Even with a bittersweet ending, the reader is left content. Absolutely an enjoyable quick read."
